MERLOT 2004

The 2004 vintage in Collio was a textbook, long-ripening classic season—cool nights, warm days, and steady rainfall balance. After over two decades of patient evolution, this zero-sulfur Merlot showcases how mountain ponca soil transforms a traditionally soft variety into a tight-grained, savory titan.

The Visual: A glowing, deep brick-garnet with dark mahogany and copper-tinged edges. Unfined and unfiltered, holding a dense, natural opacity.

The Nose: Dark, smoldering, and hauntingly evocative. Opens with dried black cherries, wild cassis, and prune plum, quickly unfolding into complex tertiary notes of pipe tobacco, cedar box, dried cep mushrooms, leather, dark cocoa, and a piercing note of crushed iron ore.

The Palate: Commandingly structured yet supple. The decades have melted the fierce oak-vat tannins into a velvet-and-suede texture. Waves of salt-cured damson plum, bitter dark chocolate, dried thyme, and savory umami course through the palate, propelled by an electric vein of cool-climate mountain acidity and crushed-stone minerality.

Radikon’s aged Merlots flip every modern preconception of the grape on its head. There is no sweet oak, no overripe jamminess, and no flabby mid-palate. Instead, the 2004 Merlot offers a profound, wild, and deeply intellectual experience that sits somewhere between aged Right Bank Bordeaux, rustic Northern Rhône, and ancestral Friulian soul. It is an immortal, bucket-list red for natural wine lovers.

Best enjoyed: Cellar temperature (15–17°C / 59–63°F). Decant gently 30–45 minutes before serving in broad Burgundy or Bordeaux bowls to let two decades of sleeping energy unfold.
