CORTON CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU 2016
A true unicorn wine, transcending the borders of the natural wine world and shattering definition, this 100% natural Chardonnay is born out of wise 80 years old vines in the sacred heart of Bourgogne, the tiny lieu-dit Grand Cru of "Le Charlemagne". The vineyard sits on a South-facing slope on rocky soils characterised by white marlstone and sandstone, producing just about two barrels of this infinite nectar only in the best vintages. Work in the vineyard is strictly biodynamic, while the grapes are spontaneously fermented very slowly. The wine then sees an elevage in large barrels for at least 18 months on the lees, before being bottled with no fining, filtration and just a tiny hint of SO2. It’s a wine of otherworldly complexity, finesse, and unending power and eloquence: deeply mineral epic tales envelop a core of ripe yellow fruit, iodine accents and forgotten spices.
