Fonterenza’s Rosso di Montalcino, which some would call Brunello’s baby brother, is a wonderfully exuberant and characteristically bright expression of Sangiovese in this unparalleled terroir. We’re at the foothills of Mount Amiata, on the South versant of Montalcino, surrounded by woods and a diverse and vibrant ecosystem. Coming from biodynamically farmed grapes, it ferments wildly in steel then ages for a number of months in steel, followed by a period in old wood. Tension and kaleidoscopic dynamism reign: wild hyacinth and thyme, forest strawberries, Eastern spices and bittersweet roots.
