Sophia is nothing short of a true mastodon of an orange wine, with a deep and almost esoteric connection with its terroir. It’s the only wine for which Cantina Giardino follows a kind of protocol, changing each year. It’s born out of the desire to have the earth speak through this wine and it does so with special clay amphoras crafted with Irpinia’s own matter. Every year Daniela and Antonio select a grape and cru, or combination or more, that they deem most suited for a long 6 months in amphora, in this case the focus being therefore more on the maceration and the amphora than the variety. This is a shimmering amber sun of a wine, elegantly lush and incredibly vibrant: braised Abbot pear with madeira and dried honeysuckle, caramelised figs with valerian root, cardamom and bergamot peel
